Makuya Nature Reserve

Makuya Nature Reserve is a 9,000 hectare Limpopo Parks provincial nature reserve, which is located in the northern Greater Kruger National Park.

Fenceless boundaries exist with the Makuleke Concession to the east, and across the Luvuvhu River with the Nyalaland Wilderness are of Kruger National Park, so wildlife is free to roam between these areas.  Transfrontier Parks Destinations hold the tourism concession.

It is an area of spectacular beauty and amazing diversity.  Although the Big 5 occur, they are only add an excitement, if encountered, to these trails which are focused on all aspects of nature, big or small.

Greater Kruger National Park Luvuvhu Discovery Trail

In association with Pafuri Camp, Transfrontier Parks Destinations, The Outpost and Makuya Game Reserve, Accipiter is able to offer a 5 or 8 night adventure that explores, on foot, the exceptional natural beauty and wildlife in the wilderness areas along the Luvuvhu and Mutale Rivers as they wind their way through Makuya and the Makuleke Concession. This region possesses some of the most diverse topography and vegetation in the Kruger National Park and surrounding areas.

The trail, for a maximum of 8 guests, broadly follows the rivers, visits 3 spectacular gorges, and encounters the abundant wildlife of the area. The total walking distance of about 60 kms is usually exceeded as the trail often deviates from the rivers to explore other attractions in the area, which justifiably has the reputation of being the bio-diversity jewel of the Kruger. Although the Big 5 occur, they only add an excitement, if encountered, to these trails which focus on all aspects of nature, big or small.

Starting in Makuya and ending at Pafuri Camp in Makuleke, overnight stops are in pre-established campsites interspersed with lodges. Guests only need small day backpacks as their overnight requirements will be transported separately to the next overnight destination. This lodge hopping concept allows guests to experience the thrill of camping in the wilderness, with its unique experiences, in the knowledge that the comforts of a lodge will follow.

Although daily walking distances are comfortable, a high level of fitness is necessary as some of the sections are steep and difficult.

In association with Transfrontier Parks Destinations, Johna is able to offer a 5 night back-packing trail in the Makuya wilderness.

This trail captures the spectacular beauty of the area. With a maximum of 8 guests, the trail starts at Singo Lodge and ends at Mutale Falls Lodge. The 4 days on the trail in between are spent exploring along the Luvuvhu and Mutale Rivers and the adjacent wilderness. The trail goes through the Luvuvhu Gorge (also known as Luvuvhu Poort), where the sandstone cliffs provide breath-taking scenery.  Camping locations are set up on open sandy areas near the rivers or open areas in the bush, where guests can enjoy the magic of sleeping with the night sky above.  For safety, guests sit watch on a rotation basis each night.

Walking, camping under the stars, sitting watch at night and just experiencing nature in this wilderness is exhilarating.

Although daily walking distances are comfortable, a high level of fitness is necessary as some of the sections are steep and difficult.
