Johna Turner has been a freelance guide for a number of years. After a lifetime where nature was his recreational priority, he left the corporate world and pursued a guiding career to fulfill his passion for the bush and share it with others.
Johna established Accipiter Tours and Trails in 2008. Johna is a registered guide who qualified through the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) as a nature guide, trails guide, and savanna and montane grassland birding specialist.
He operates walking trails and educational nature experiences in pristine wilderness areas of South Africa, which were chosen to portray a wide spectrum of different habitats and wildlife. Many of these are offered in association with Eco-Tourism organisations in these areas.
Johna is intimately involved with Discovery Trails through a mutual objective of promoting conservation in the Makuleke Concession area of Greater Kruger National Park. He is involved in promoting and guiding the EcoQuest, EcoScience and InterGen experiences offered by Discovery Trails.
Johna has a long standing relationship with EcoTraining and he has instructed on many of their EcoQuest and birding courses. In particular, Johna presents the course EcoQuest: The Ecology of Makuleke. This course explores this amazing ecology on foot, and entegrates the theoretical aspects with the practical excursions.
Johna is closely involved with RETURN Africa, who have recently re-opened Pafuri Camp in northern Kruger National Park after it was devastated By floods in 2013.
